The Gettysburg National Military Park is one of my favorite Civil War battlefields to explore. It was in this area that the Battle of Gettysburg was fought over a 3-day period in July of 1863. For this photo shoot, we headed to the Pennsylvania State Memorial located at Cemetery Ridge, the primary defensive position of the Union Army. (more…)
About one year ago, I published a post called “Confessions of a New Blogger.” In it, I described my journey as a first time blogger and the realization that maintaining a weekly blog would be unsustainable given my other passions and desire to spend time with family and friends. (more…)
This photo shoot continues our tour of the Petersburg National Battlefield. This time we took pictures in an area where a handful of men from the Union army clandestinely dug a mine that reached the Confederate lines. Once under the Confederate position, the mine was filled with explosives and detonated! The explosion caused the Earth to tremble propelling Confederate men and artillery into the air and creating a huge crater that was at least 30 feet deep and approximately 120 feet wide! (more…)
Sometimes, life’s wonderful moments happen unexpectedly. About a month or so ago, my friend, Bill, surprised me. He said he would be in my area attending his older brother’s pinning ceremony for promotion to Colonel in the United States Air Force! I was so happy for Bill and his family because many years before, their father had a similar pinning ceremony when he was promoted to Colonel. Their military service had come full circle and I can only imagine the pride and joy beaming from their hearts as Stephen was pinned. (more…)
Visiting Civil War battlefields is a pastime my dad and I share. So, anytime we can combine a visit with a photo shoot makes for a lively afternoon. This shoot took place at the Petersburg National Battlefield. It was here approximately 152 years ago that Union General Ulysses S. Grant lay siege to Petersburg in a successful attempt to destroy Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s army. General Grant understood that devastating the Confederate’s main supply line at Petersburg would eventually secure the fall of Richmond, the Confederate capital. (more…)
The arrival of Fall, my favorite time of year, softens the blow of Summer’s adieu. For me, routine replaces spontaneity and the countdown to Christmas begins! 🙂 Fall foliage captivates as I enjoy nature’s wandering work of art dancing all around me in vivid hues of yellow, orange, and red. Fall’s ephemeral beauty decorates the landscape in a kaleidoscope of leaves while the aroma of firewood fills the crisp evening air, awakening the senses. (more…)
Now that I have a deep appreciation for history, I feel so fortunate to be surrounded by it. Historic St. Mary’s City in St. Mary’s County, Maryland was the site for this latest photo shoot. (more…)
My Forever BFF, Tammy, can be quite humorous. From the moment I picked her up at the airport, we were in stitches. She was telling me about her flight and her long delay at the Houston, TX airport. There, she was speaking with an individual to pass time. This guy asked her where she was headed and she said with cautious confidence, “Charlotte, South Carolina!” However, from the look on the man’s face, she knew she said something incorrect. So, she reacted with, “I think.” The guy snickered and Tammy added, “North Carolina? South Carolina? I don’t know! I just know it’s one of the Carolinas!” 🙂 (more…)
It’s always a great weekend when we can take blog pictures and indulge in Civil War history. My dad and I did exactly that Fourth of July weekend. We toured Union General Ulysses S. Grant’s Headquarters at City Point Museum, located inside Appomattox Manor approximately 8 miles outside Petersburg, VA and part of the Petersburg National Battlefield. (more…)
