Tredegar Iron Works – It’s all About the Fringe

Double Shot

What is Instagram etiquette?  Whenever I get a new follower, I often wonder if I’m supposed to follow back even if the follower’s “brand” is completely different from my own.  Initially, I followed followers back out of courtesy.  Then, this started happening.  With some followers, soon after I started following back, the follower would un-follow me.  Huh?!

This behavior is juvenile to me and completely disingenuous.  Are some Instagram users that desperate for followers?  Could it be that they are no longer interested in my content a day or two later?  Or could some of these followers be fake; the result of a software application?

Again, huh?!

Apparently, spam and “bots” are fake accounts.  Some social media users (personal, business, even celebrities) will sometimes pay (some are free) for these “bots” to increase their number of followers and make them appear to be more popular than they actually are.  It is a marketing ruse that, in my opinion, diminishes the integrity of a brand.  Other spam accounts somehow evade security and infiltrate accounts on its own.

When I first posted on Instagram on Memorial Day, it was very exciting (still is too) to watch the number of followers increase ever so slowly.  However, I became too focused on that.  It is hard not to feel a little envious of style bloggers with followers in the thousands. Though, I am very happy for them too because their success is a result of the time and effort they put into their brand.  It is motivating and inspiring all at the same time.

I see now focusing on gaining followers and envying everyone else’s is the wrong approach for me.  Envy is ignorance (thank you for that insight, Ralph Waldo Emerson!) and when I practice that, I lose sight of God’s blessings.  I lose sight of me and my reason for creating Lizzy’s Latest:  to share my love of heels, fashion, travel, and history through an open journal, my website, for anyone interested or curious.

As for Instagram etiquette, one need not follow a follower out of courtesy.  Doing so could cause brand dilution and confusion to an unknowing audience.  Always be clear and consistent when promoting your brand.  And when considering following a follower, do your homework.  Does this follower compliment your brand?  Is this follower engaging and interactive?  If so, a reciprocal action would be wise as it helps all parties involved.

Thank you for taking the time to read about my experience as a new blogger.  Perhaps you’ve experienced this too?  I’d love to hear from you!  Drop me a line and let’s talk.  🙂

Have a wonderful week!

Lizzy’s Latest for this week is the Report Signature Noemie T-Strap Fringe Sandals.  I will give my review of these sandals in the next day or two.  For now, enjoy the pictures!
