Lizzy’s Latest – My Favorite Girl
If youβve been following my blog on a regular basis, you know about my Forever BFF, Tammy, and my East Coast BFF, Packy. Well, there is one other girl who completes my trifecta of besties. She was a girl I used to know who remains close to my heart. She was my Eternal BFF, Shari. The first time we met was serendipitous and from that moment on, we became the best of friends. We got into so much mischief together (as kids do!), but always gave the appearance of being perfect angels. π When we lost touch many years ago, I never forgot Shari, even searching for her over the years to no avail. Her impact on my life was immense and I often reminisced about our adventures and prayed that she was healthy and happy.
In January, I received a Facebook request from a βShari.β The tiny profile pic looked like my Shari, but was it really her?! Curious and hopeful, I approved the Facebook request.
Shari responded: βOMG. Itβs me Elizabeth. Iβve been looking for you for so long and got discouraged because of people claiming to be you, but always failed when I asked them to answer one question only my Elizabeth knows. Ready? Where did we meet?β
I had tears in my eyes when I read that message. She was indeed my Shari! Memories came flooding back to the day we met. I was at a New Kids on the Block (NKOTB) concert (read about how I got tickets here). My seats were decent, but I wanted to be closer. So, I decided to see how close to the stage I could get. Surprisingly, I managed to get really close to the stage and once there I was unsure what to do next fearing security would usher me away at any moment. Thatβs when a gorgeous blonde girl in the front row realized my dilemma and motioned me to come forward. When I did, she promptly scooted over to make room for me. I couldnβt believe it! I thanked her for her kindness and we quickly introduced ourselves. Shariβs altruism filled my heart with joy as we danced and sang with our boys. I knew, in that moment, I had met my best friend!
I quickly responded the correct answer and waited patiently for her reply.
Shari wrote back: βHey, my favorite girl, Iβm ecstatic I found youβ¦our adventures come up often and I laugh and cry because I miss you so much. Finding you is my most precious gift this yearβ¦canβt wait to catch up and come see you.β
My favorite girl was back! I could feel the sincerity in her words and it touched my heart. Shari is beautiful, humble, strong, vulnerable, loyal, comical, and fiercely protective of her family and friends. That has not changed and she is a true blessing in my life. π
Weβve been in frequent contact catching up, sharing pictures, and indulging in nostalgia. Shari is happily married to Eddie and has two beautiful kids, Alex and Riley. We were supposed to meet this week, but this pandemic has caused us to delay our much anticipated reunion. Grrr!!!
The best kind of messages between us are the ones that begin with, βremember whenβ¦β That always makes me smile. She told me her kids know all about our hijinks and perhaps thought I didnβt really existβ¦until now. π
Our story is not over. It never was. It was only delayed. There are new chapters to come and I look forward to sharing them with you here on the blog. I am just so happy my Eternal BFF is back and weβll be hanginβ tough until we meet again! π
The following are some fun throwback pics:
Have a wonderful and safe weekend. Though, if youβre like me, every day feels like Groundhog day. If isolation is draining you, why not reach out to someone you havenβt spoken to in a while? This is a great time to reconnect and/or mend fences. It will lift your spirits and cleanse your soul. It is a wonderful feeling! π
Lizzyβs Latest for this week is the Lucky Brand Margalina sandals. My review of these espadrilles will post sometime next week or the week after. For now, enjoy the pictures.
Style with a Smile!
XoXo,

Mike – you really make my heart smile! Thank you for your beautiful words. I am so happy you enjoyed reading this post about my BFF, Shari. She and I did everything together and went everywhere together. So much of my past has her imprint on it. I know she will enjoy reading your comment. We are planning a trip to Savannah and maybe this time we can finally meet. You’ll get to meet Shari too. π

The story of your and Shari’s friendship is a delight, and now that you’ve reconnected. I look forward to hearing new chapters added to the story.
The pictures of you, Shari, Lee, Chad and the others are snapshots of a blissful moment in time. I’m blessed that I got to be there for a little of it too, but its also a bit of a curse. Not that anything bad happened that evening other than I over-exposed and thus ruined the best shots of you and Shari. (Lizzy’s Latest fans would have loved those.) Other than that and as far as I know everything about the evening for you was magical and happy. Just as it should be. I say “curse’ because when I look at the pictures, especially the one of the six of you, I can’t help thinking of the misfortunes, even tragedy, that would follow for some of the people in it. As your dad, it was always my goal to make sure you weren’t part of that subset.

Thank you, Dad! You did well raising me, Michael, and Jeanette. That prom night was magical. I remember it like it was yesterday. It’s unfortunate those pics were ruined. Shari and I had fun posing for the pics. Despite, it was perhaps a foreshadow of your latest dive into photography as the photographer of Lizzy’s Latest and this time around, no more ruined film. π Unfortunately, there was tragedy when I found out Chris passed on. He was so nice and I loved playing tennis with him all summer long. Michael used to play video games with him because Chris always had the latest games. Incidentally, Chris came to see me one summer I was visiting Shari. I have pictures from that day too. Shari and I are in touch often. I’m sure she would be game to recreate that photo shoot one day. π

Thank you so much, Ashley! I never thought I would ever reconnect with Shari again. So, I was so ecstatic that she found me considering I am so hard to find on social media. I love that you’re a Blockhead too! I’m sure you have lots of stories from their nostalgia tours over the last 10 years. π

I’m so glad you liked the story, Margot! I couldn’t believe it myself when Shari found me. It was such a happy feeling. That prom dress had to be ordered from California and and then I had to have it hemmed because it was too big. I wore sequined red heels and everyone told me they reminded them of the ruby red slippers from the Wizard of Oz. Lol! Hope you are having a great week!

That’s amazing! I had a friend I’ve been going to elementary school with, but she moved abroad with her family and after some years we completely lost touch, these was before all the technology and social media. However, we managed to reunite eventually, trough a mutual friend, and I even got to see her in China where he was living at the time. We’re still in touch to these day and manage to see each other once or twice a year π

This is such a wonderful story! And I loved seeing these old photos, you looked so beautiful and you are so beautiful now!! When I was in 6th grade I was best friends with a girl from the USA who moved to the Netherlands with her family. Three years later they moved to Germany and then… we lost touch. Luckily due to social media, we found each other again after so many years. We’ve never met again in person (they live in the USA again), but I would love to meet them all!

Wow! You have a wonderful story too, Layla! Thank you for sharing! I hope one day you two can see each other in person. Interestingly, I was pen pals with a boy in the Netherlands when I was in 6th grade. We kept in touch through high school. His name was Steen Hansen. He was really nice and this is so weird, but he had a resemblance to my Uncle Mark. Lol! Thank you for taking the time to read this post and for your very lovely comments. Happy weekend, beautiful!

I’m so happy you liked the post, Natalia! I’ve been meaning to write it since January when Shari and I reconnected. It just took some time to put my feelings into words. Shari and I are so looking forward to seeing each other once this pandemic is over. I will definitely put that on the blog. π Happy weekend!
