Point Lookout, MD – Mellow in Yellow

5797 Final

Yellow is quite popular this summer.  The trend was seen on runways and many celebrities have made the color a staple of their summer wardrobe.  Even Duchess Kate wore yellow as she presented Princess Charlotte to an adoring audience on the steps of St. Mary’s hospital.

So, I wanted in too!  Though, I’d like to think I was ahead of this fashion trend because the outfit/wedge combination in this blog post is actually from a few summers ago.  I wore it to a summer concert and now I want to share it with you.

I love this outfit because of its summertime appeal.  I also love how it makes me feel like a sweet Southern belle.  How appropriate the feeling because my dad and I chose Point Lookout, MD for the site of this photo shoot (last week’s and next week’s too).

Maryland was a border state during the Civil War meaning sympathies were high for both sides.  It wasn’t uncommon for brother to fight brother or son to fight father.  It was reality and part of the reason why the Civil War was so emotionally charged for many families.

Southern Maryland was mostly pro-South.  These pictures were taken at the Confederate Memorial Park.  This memorial, unknown to many, was constructed by the Point Lookout Descendents Organization.  It honors the men who died or survived imprisonment at Point Lookout Prison.

I realize it is not “mainstream” to revere Southern monuments, but I respect Southern heritage and Southern pride.  I am a student of history fascinated by both sides of the War Between the States and I will continue to share my interest of Civil War history on this blog.

My dad and I spent a lot of time here because most of the pictures were not to my liking!  I think it is because I am vertically challenged (barely 5’4”) and I was wearing a dress that puffed out from the waist down.  So, I looked unflattering in almost every picture.  In some angles, I even thought I looked pregnant!

The photo shoot went something like this:  my dad would take about 10 pictures in sequence, hand me the camera to review, to which I would shake my head.  After the 5th time or so of this happening, my dad, exasperated, bemoaned, “None of them?!”  To which I responded, “No.”  I could tell he was not pleased, but my dad was a trooper with the patience of Job.  So, we continued until I had about ten I thought I could work with.  I am very lucky to have a dad who encourages and supports me!  Thanks, Dad!  🙂

Have a wonderful week!
