Petersburg, VA – The Dictator – Savannah Adventure Highlights: Part 4
My Forever BFF, Tammy, LOVES animals. I love animals too…from a distance. 😉
When we visited the Oatland Island Wildlife Center, I expected a zoo-like experience. Instead, we navigated trails through the woods! Being an indoors girl, I was out of my comfort zone. However, my initial panic was kept at bay after passing a family with kids. If they weren’t afraid, I wouldn’t be either.
Everything was going well at the first exhibit. I marched confidently up a ramp for a better view of the bison and as I turned the corner, a lizard darted passed me stealing my determination! I screamed and then yelled, “LIZARD!” My scream startled a couple nearby, but I was too preoccupied to apologize because my only thought was to race down the ramp to get away from it! EEEK! Tammy found my reaction hilarious as she ran up the ramp in search of the lizard.
I knew from that moment, it would be a long hike through the woods, but I survived! 😉 Aside from nervously jumping at every rustle in the leaves (I will never understand how hiking can be considered peaceful!), my only other concern came when we saw this sign:
Fortunately, we didn’t encounter any roaming gators that afternoon!
After our adventurous (I’m certain Tammy would use a difference adjective) experience at Oatland Island, I thought it would be meaningful for Tammy to see the Atlantic Ocean since this was her first time on the East Coast. We drove to Tybee Island. The sand was scorching hot that day burning our feet as we picked up our pace to the water. I recorded the moments on my phone as she strolled into the Atlantic. As she got her feet wet, she was struck at how much warmer the water was compared to the Pacific Ocean. I told her by August, the water would feel like a sauna!
The rest of our time in Savannah was mostly a whirlwind of activities including a Civil War tour, a ghost tour, and even a dinner cruise on our last night. On another night, we had dinner at Paula Dean’s The Lady and Sons restaurant. I hate buffets, but I have to admit, and Tammy agrees, the fried chicken was excellent. Our favorite phrase that night was, “Butter Ya’ll.” Ha! 🙂
We did have downtime one evening. We spent hours at the famous Leopold’s ice cream shop talking, laughing, and reminiscing. For a brief moment, as I listened to Tammy tell her stories, I saw us again as the two little girls from years ago who became “blood” sisters for life. We were “Tiffany” and “Toni,” our childhood alter egos when we were barely teens, but told all the guys we met we were 16! 😉 I smiled at the memories. I was so grateful to have this time with Tammy. To run away from reality with my Forever BFF, enjoy each other’s company, and make new memories. Our gap years seem so insignificant now because although we had lived separate lives, our bond was never broken.
I had such a lovely time with Tammy. I’m looking forward to our next adventure next year! 🙂
Have a wonderful week. 🙂
