I never realized typing and texting could be hazardous to my health!  For years, I have typed head and shoulders hunched forward in front of a computer.  Then, when texting replaced talking, my posture further deteriorated becoming reminiscent of our more primitive ancestors.  Of course, posture was rarely on my mind because I never had any serious issues that caused me concern. Hello, Spring!  I am happy that Winter is behind us now.  I’m looking forward to wearing shorts, summer dresses, and everything in between again.  🙂  I’ve already started my Spring/Summer shoe shopping list (no purchases yet because it’s still Lent!) and it seems like lace up shoes are having a moment.  I see them everywhere now which makes the Steve Madden Sambaa lace up heels so relevant.      (more…)

One concept I would love to learn more about is affiliate marketing for bloggers.  I believe this is an important tool in promoting my brand and reaching new audiences.  My blogger friend, Eccentric Owl, has a great post on affiliate marketing and I wanted to share her post with you.  For now, because of lack of time, I rely on word of mouth advertising from family and friends.  I also post on social media sites like Instagram and Facebook.     (more…)

Back in the Fall, I was dazzled by the assortment of boots and booties in the market.  I wanted to buy every shoe that caught my eye. Over the years, I have learned to control my sometimes impetuous shopping personality.  So each season, I make a list of all the shoes I “have to have” and then give myself a few days or more, if I’m anticipating a sale, to think about my shopping list.  Occasionally, I realize I have similar shoes or the “what was I thinking” moment hits me before buying the shoes.  Of course, I’m not always consistent with this discipline.  When it comes to my heel addiction, theory is always better than practice.  😉  (more…)

The religious season of Lent for Roman Catholics is the period between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday.  It symbolizes the 40 days Jesus spent in the desert as Satan unsuccessfully tempted Him to forsake God.  It is a beautiful story of humility and discipline.  It is an encouraging story of the perseverance of good when confronted with evil.  It is why Lent is a time of abstinence, repentance, and introspection. For this heel/outfit combo, I was searching for a location that was serene and unspoiled.  Mount Carmel Monastery in Port Tobacco, Maryland came to mind after I remembered a conversation I had with a priest one year.  Without going into too much detail, he wanted me to talk to a nun at Mount Carmel about religious life.  I had thought about becoming a nun when I was in high school, but that thought dissipated when I started college.  I did as he asked and as magnanimous and humbling a cloistered life in a monastery would be for me, it was definitely not something I wanted to pursue.  I walked the grounds after my conversation and even sat in the little chapel for a bit noting the beauty of this hidden treasure built in 1790.  It was the perfect setting for this chic heel/outfit combo.    (more…)

Mount Carmel Monastery – ‘Tis the Season for Volunteering

During the early years of the Civil War Sesquicentennial (2011-2015), my dad and I visited many Civil War battlefields and museums for the first time.  After visiting the Museum of the Confederacy (MoC) where the White House of the Confederacy is located in Richmond, VA, I fell in love with Southern history and heritage.  I was enthralled and engaged, but I wanted more.  I had thought about volunteering and my dad even suggested I look into volunteering at the MoC, but it never came to fruition.  Yet, the yearning for something more lingered. The Dr. Mudd House Museum

The Dr. Mudd farmhouse, known as St. Catherine, was an 1857 wedding gift to Dr. Mudd and his wife, Sarah Frances. It is a two story farmhouse on about 218 acres of land. John Wilkes Booth and David Herold banged on the door seen in this pic, bottom right in the early morning hours of April 15, 1865.

The week leading up to Easter in the Spring of 1865 marked a pivotal time in American history.  Confederate General, Robert E. Lee’s hope for a victorious South was dashed with the defeat at Sailor’s Creek on April 6.  This, in part, led to Lee’s sorrowful surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia to Union General Ulysses S. Grant three days later at Appomattox Court House in rural Virginia.  Though other battles persisted for a few more months, this act effectively ended the American Civil War.             (more…)

Last Saturday, the weather was partly sunny, around 58 degrees, and with a breeze.  It was perfect weather for wearing booties.  With the cooler temps, I paired them with a long-sleeved plaid top cinched with a belt and cords.  Both top and pants are from Ann Taylor Loft.         (more…)
