Bethesda/Rockville, MD – A Breath of Fresh Air

I had an interesting experience this week.  On Monday, I pulled out of my garage and noticed my car sounded loud.  Initially, I was concerned, but not concerned enough to stop and check it out.  Yes, a complete “knows nothing about cars” chick reaction!  So, I continued my 45-mile drive to work convincing myself the sound was normal.  Eventually, I had to turn up the music to drown it out.  No sound, no problem, right?  I got to work safely and decided my 9-year old car was beginning to show its age.

It was after work that I realized what the loud sound was:  a flat tire on the rear passenger side!  Panic set in.  I called my co-worker, Anna, for help.  As soon as she arrived, I immediately felt better.  The fear of having to deal with this alone subsided and I called my insurance company for roadside assistance.

While waiting for roadside assistance, Anna, who has Barney Fife’s innocence and Bo and Luke Duke’s determination, decided to play first time mechanic on my car.  I was concerned when Anna asked me to pop the trunk.  She said she needed to get the jack out.  I was certain I did not own a jack.  She said every car has a jack.  A moment of hesitance; I opened my trunk.  She then popped a side panel out to my utter shock.  EEECKKK!  What are you doing?!  At this moment, I was fearful she had broken something.  Then, to my surprise, Anna pulled out a jack.  She then lifted the bottom of my trunk where the spare tire is located and found the tool kit.  She opened it and pulled out greasy/rusty tools.  Gross.  She was set to change my tire when, to my relief, the mechanic showed up.

Anna would not have gotten far because, according to the mechanic, the spare was rusty and stuck due to a leak in the trunk.  The mechanic decided to plug my tire instead while Anna, his new apprentice, observed and asked questions.  She was the one who discovered the phillips head screw (I was amazed she knew the name of this screw!) embedded in my tire.  He was impressed with her enthusiasm and found it amusing that she didn’t mind getting her hands dirty.  I, on the other hand, in a blue mini-skirt and blue heels, preferred not to get dirty.  Total diva, I know!  😉

I’m just thankful this happened at work during nice weather.  I can’t imagine the chaos I would have experienced has this happened on the freeway.

Have a wonderful week!  🙂
