Shoespiration – Naturalizer Joy Sandals
I hope y’all had a wonderful weekend. My weekend was full of adventure. If you read my Gettysburg post, I called out my best guy friend, William. He is a history enthusiast and an expert on Southern Maryland history, particularly John Wilkes Booth’s escape after assassinating President Abraham Lincoln. Booth found his way to Southern Maryland seeking help from Dr. Samuel A. Mudd to treat his broken leg.
From the Mudd farm (see the Gettysburg post for more on the beginning of the escape route), he and his co-conspirator, David Harold, evaded the Federals with the help of locals. They traversed the treacherous Zekiah Swamp and hid out for several days in an area known as the Pine Thicket. Booth and Harold eventually crossed the Potomac River into Virginia where Booth met his demise.
For years, William had promised to show me the escape route in Charles County, MD. He finally made good on that promise on Saturday. William picked me and Dad up (yes, Dad loves history too) and for the next 2.5 hours, we followed the route Booth and Harold most likely took in their escape to Virginia. We saw a former tavern, houses, the Pine Thicket, and more! The history nerd in me was totally geeking out.
I love living in this area and being so close to history, albeit infamous history at that! 😉 I took pictures and there will be a special Heels on the Battlefield post in the coming months detailing Booth’s escape route. Can’t wait to share the post with you! 😊
From history to heels, Lizzy’s Latest Shoespiration segment is featuring the Naturalizer Joy sandals this week. When I first saw these sandals, I was enamored with the color called “Icy Grey.” I also loved the edgy texture of these block heels. And at approximately 3.75 inches, these beauties are my perfect height. 😊 Naturalizer is known for its cushioned insole, so I knew these heels would be pretty comfortable.
My misfortune came with the sizing. My size 6 was all sold out at Macy’s. Initially, I was soooo bummed! Then, I did a search for the heels and found them on Amazon AND in my size! I took advantage of Amazon Prime and those sandals were at my doorstep pronto.
They did not disappoint either! They fit so well and are so comfortable. They are perfect for the office as in this look with a white skirt and grey top. Of course, for more modesty, add a cardigan to the mix. 😉 You could also wear these heels with jeans for a more casual vibe. They are that versatile!
I love them so much, I bought them in pink too. I’m certain you will see the pink ones on Instagram if you follow me there (@LizzysLatest). And if you’re not following, please consider following me for additional (not found on the blog) fashion inspo. Of course, I always appreciate all your love and support no matter how you follow me.
Have a great week! Coming up on the blog is Lizzy’s Latest annual Top 5 Fall Favorites. Look out for that soon!

I bet that made for a wonderful weekend, Lizzy. It’s always so much better when you get the inside scoop from someone who really knows the lay of the land.
And those shoes?? Absolutely fabulous!! I can see why you need two pair!!

I agree! William has been studying the Booth escape route for years and even showed us houses where things most likely happened. What is fascinating to me is that the current residents of those homes most likely don’t know the history of their home. Yet, it was fun seeing places we see everyday and knowing the inside scoop behind them. Glad you like the heels and can relate to my shoe addiction, Jodie. 😉

It’s worthwhile to note, that in the fourth through sixth pictures from the top, the white cubic stone Lizzy is standing on is a mounting block a.k.a. a carriage step. It’s a remnant from the days of the horse and buggy when blocks like this were used for getting in and out of a carriage. The particular block Lizzy is standing on was hewn from what appears to be granite or marble. Such material is very resistant to the weather, difficult to move and was much more expensive than the alternatives. All of which explains why it is only block remaining along a street that once had a carriage step in front of every house. The street is stately Washington Ave, which is where monuments to Mary Washington and Hugh Mercer are located, and is reminiscent of Richmond’s Monument Ave. My guess is the similarity was intentional given the timeframe of its creation and the proximity (culturally as well geographically) of Fredericksburg to Richmond.
As for the second picture from the top, we learned that William’s knowledge of Booth’s escape route comes not only from books and his growing up in Southern Maryland’s Charles County, but also from being personally acquainted with descendants of some of the folks who lived there when the history was being made. Unlike other buffs (they are legion) who depend on third hand and greater witness accounts, William has met and learned from secondary sources (i.e. people whose information came directly from actual witnesses). These sources, he told us, didn’t have an abundance of information with regard to Booth. There was so much fear of retribution, that even decades after the Lincoln Assassination, the people of Southern Maryland mostly kept their mouths closed about the event. So one can only imagine how much information was taken to the grave.
