Maryland is such a beautiful state!  To this day, we continue to discover amazing treasures such as the War Correspondents Memorial Arch at Gathland State Park in Western Maryland.  I was so excited to have a fall photo shoot here because of the gorgeous backdrop.  Part of the Appalachian Trail cuts through here and the area is steeped in Civil War history that I was not aware of until we found this hidden gem.  I’m hoping to write more about its Civil War past in future blog posts.  (more…)

So, I have to give credit to my dad for suggesting a carnival photo shoot for the 4th of July.  When we were throwing out ideas, I thought it would be cool to take a drive to Williamsburg, VA and check out the President Heads.  When I showed Dad some pics, he scoffed and reminded me my stilettos would get dirty in the mud.  OK … maybe, not my best idea, but I was also a little hesitant about the carnival thinking it would be too crowded.  Dad assured me we would go before it opened and despite my reticence, I agreed for lack of a better location. This was the second photo shoot taken at Sideling Hill Road Cut (aka The Cut) in Western Maryland.  After the photo shoot, an older woman struck up a conversation with Dad and me.  She told us her family is local to the area and that her great, great, great grandfather was part of the construction crew that blasted through the mountains.  “Great, great, great grandfather”, I asked?  “Yes,” said the woman, “great, great, great grandfather.”  Well, he must have been one fit old man considering construction occurred in the early 1980s!  😉  (more…)

The weekend we took these pics, my dad was dealing with a bad cold.  He did not let on how sick he was until we were on our way to Western Maryland for this photo shoot.  I felt awful and suggested we cancel the shoot, but my dad said he took medicine and was feeling better.  So, we headed to Sideling Hill Road Cut (aka The Cut). Last Saturday, I got to spend time with my Godson, Andrew, and niece, Kristin.  On their way to the beach, my brother and his family took a break from their drive for some family time.  The kids were excited too about a slumber party with Aunt Lizzy.  🙂          (more…)

The Battle of Antietam

Beautiful mountains and lush forests surround the quiet town of Sharpsburg, Maryland. The tranquility of nature is inviting, like a sublime melody on constant repeat. It is hard for me juxtapose the peacefulness of today with the tragedy of bloodshed and carnage 153 years ago at the Battle of Antietam. It was the bloodiest single-day battle in American history with approximately 23,000 men dead, wounded, or missing. (more…)
