Smallwood State Park – I Love You Mom!

When I was growing up, I was a handful.  My mom told me I was a wild child with mischievous tendencies and a stubborn will.  At a young age, I remember being a curious kid eager to explore the world despite my mom’s attempt to keep me within her parental boundaries.  My independent nature certainly kept my mom on her toes because any lapse in her attention often resulted in unintended situations.

To prove her point, my mom likes to recall this story that occurred when I was 3 years old.  At that time, my family was stationed in the Philippines and my mom worked at a Chinese elementary school teaching Kindergarten and First Grade.

That year, the school put on a dance recital.  My mom was very excited to see her kids perform traditional Chinese dances.  She was also delighted to share this experience with me.  On the day of the show, my mom, our nanny, and I settled into our seats right near the stage.

My mom was captivated when her kids got on stage.  Then, her attention was interrupted when she caught sight of a little girl who ran onto the stage and began emulating the dancers.  My mom was initially amused until she realized that little girl looked a lot like her little girl.  She turned her head to the seat between her and the nanny:  EMPTY!  Panic set in when she realized I was the one on stage!  In that same moment, the nanny jumped up from her seat and rushed to the stage.

I continued dancing despite the nanny’s attempts to coax me off stage.  Some of the children stopped performing out of confusion while others continued despite the distraction.  In the end, the nanny had to drag me off stage.  Talk about an ungracious exit!

My mom, horrified and embarrassed at what transpired, had me sit on her lap the rest of the show.  Fortunately, the audience was forgiving and the show continued without another hitch.

Over the years, my mom has put up with a lot of my shenanigans.  She was strict and I was rebellious and sometimes that caused epic fights between us.  Yet, we persevered through it all and our bond is so much stronger today.  My mom loved me before I was born.  She is and always will be my best friend and confidant.  I love you Mom!  Thank you for your unconditional love and patience.  Happy Mother’s Day.  🙂

With Mother’s Day on Sunday, I wish all of you a very Happy Mother’s Day.  If you were a kid like me, God bless your mom!  If you have a kid like me, God bless you!  Life is never dull with headstrong kids!  😉

Have a wonderful week.  🙂
