Franciscan Monastery – Blue Belle
One of the highlights of my San Diego trip was a lunch reunion with my Kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Morrison. Though Mrs. Morrison is resistant to most forms of social media (like my mom!), I maintain contact with her through Christmas cards. Over the years when I would come back to San Diego, my good friend, Eric (family friend and Kindergarten classmate), and I would surprise Mrs. Morrison by showing up at her class door unannounced.
Her adoring reaction was the same all the time: first surprise, then delight from recognition. Mrs. Morrison would jump up from where she was sitting and delicately explain to her class that when Eric and I were little, we used to be in her class too. Then, she would run over and give us Berry Bear hugs and talk to us for just a few minutes because Eric and I knew we were interrupting class time, but we had to see her. I had to see her. 🙂
I surmise not too many people can say they are still in touch with their Kindergarten teacher. Perhaps, I was one of the lucky ones to have had an inspirational teacher such as Mrs. Morrison mentoring me so early in life.
She truly was like a second mother to me. For most of elementary school, my mom was a single mother working a lot of hours to pay the bills and put food on the table. Since there was no one to go home to, I found refuge in after school activities. In particular, I would happily volunteer to help Mrs. Morrison. I’m not sure if Mrs. Morrison always needed the help, but she always found something for me to do such as stapling papers and erasing the chalkboards. I remember working as slowly as possible to spend more time with my favorite teacher. She was great to talk to, always interested in what I was doing and offering great advice.
Our lunch with Mrs. Morrison was so nice. We caught up on many levels. One of the “kids” who came to the lunch was Steve, my best friend, Tammy’s husband. Mrs. Morrison held Steven (as she calls him) back a year and told him she has always carried the guilt for that necessary action. When Steve told her she was right to have held him back because he needed that extra year to grow up, you could see the relief in her eyes, grateful for Steve’s understanding and compassion.
On a lighter note, it was surreal to watch Mrs. Morrison order a margarita! What?! My Kindergarten teacher drinks? Here we were, four “kids” and my BFF having margaritas with our Kindergarten teacher. Though, I must admit, having reached my alcohol limit the night before, I settled for a glass of water instead. 😉
Have a wonderful week! 🙂
Lizzy’s Latest for this week is the Nine West Fresh3 Evening sandals. I will give my review of these sandals on Wednesday. For now, enjoy the pictures! 🙂
