Southern Maryland – Out of the Mouths of Babes
Every Christmas, I look forward to spending time with my Godsons, Andrew and Joshua, and my niece, Kristin. Usually, I get the two older kids, Andrew and Kristin, for a couple of days and we go on an adventure. Last year we went to ICE and this year, we went ice skating. I was so excited to share this experience with them because I loved ice skating as a kid. My Forever BFF, Tammy, and I would spend many Friday nights at the ice skating rink at La Jolla’s University Town Center (UTC) flirting with the cute guys as we skated to our favorite songs.
This time around, Andrew had a cute admirer chasing him around the rink. His attempts to evade her failed because she was a natural on skates and could keep up with him. I eventually suggested a race between them and they both agreed. Andrew won, of course, but when she wanted a rematch, Andrew feigned injury by falling to the ground.
“I broke my big toe” Andrew announced as we surrounded him with skepticism on our faces.
“Stop…you did not break your big toe,” I responded.
“I did! I’ll show you,” Andrew retorted as he jumped up and skated off the ice.
“You wouldn’t be skating like that if you did,” I yelled as we followed him off the ice.
Andrew took off his skate to reveal perfectly aligned toes.
“You’re such a faker,” I teased to which Andrew said, “No – see my toes are red!”
“Only because it’s cold in here silly…”
Despite his antics, Andrew’s “girlfriend” stayed close to him to the very end. 😉
Kristin and I found the whole situation funny. I was with her the majority of the time helping her find her balance on the ice. By the end of the session, Kristin was able to skate without holding on to the sides or to me. I was very proud of her. 🙂
The next day we made our annual trek up to New Jersey to visit my Aunt Lisa, Uncle Shawn, and cousin, Caroline. There we indulged in good Italian food, presents, and the comfort of family. We were extra lucky this year as family members we had not seen in years were there too.
My brother, Michael, Andrew, and Kristin headed back up to Hagerstown, MD to spend Christmas Eve with his in-laws. Then, on Christmas Day, Michael brought his whole family down to Southern Maryland for more family time with us. It was the first time in a while that I saw my sister-in-law, Shannon, and my youngest Godson, Joshua. We had a great time catching up.
The most memorable moment of Christmas 2017 happened during dessert time. We were eating Dad’s famous chocolate pudding pies. Mont blanc, anyone? 😉 As we were eating, conversation went to Mom’s obsession with clocks. In my parent’s home, my mom has to have a clock on every wall. This way, wherever she is sitting, Mom never has to turn her head to see the time. 🙂 I pointed to Mom’s new clock: Pinocchio with a Jiminy Cricket swinging pendulum.
Josh turned his head to see the new clock and curiously exclaimed:
“WHAT IS THAT ON PINOCCHIO’S PEE PEE?”
It took a moment of realization before we all erupted in laughter. Josh laughed too, though not quite understanding why his question caused such amusement. 🙂
My dad later commented about how the women continued laughing while the men sat awkwardly observing us unable to quell our laughter. Only out of the mouths of babes, right?! 😉
Below are some more Christmas pics:
Have a wonderful week. 🙂

As if to prove the point about Mother needing a clock on every wall, there’s one just above her head in her photo. And just to show the apple doesn’t roll far from the tree when it comes to being reliant on antiquated technology, there’s a sign for the post office just above your head in another photo.

Haha – I didn’t even notice the clock until you pointed it out, Dad. Too funny! That’s true too…I still need the post office to mail my bills! 😉
