Dr. Samuel A. Mudd Elementary – Holiday Traditions
September through December is my favorite time of year. The oppressive heat of Summer dissipates into the more comfortable temperatures of Fall. Leaves begin to change colors putting on a spectacular show before dancing their final act through the air in a random spiral to the ground. Halloween comes and goes and before I know it, Thanksgiving and Christmas are around the corner.
One of my holiday traditions is to take Thanksgiving week off. I use this week to bake, decorate, watch movies, and put up the Christmas tree. I also do the majority of my Christmas shopping this week so that I can enjoy the Christmas season. The thought of long lines and having to find parking the weeks leading up to Christmas is enough motivation for me to shop early!
My shopping partner is my mom. She is such a shopaholic that she sometimes loses all sense of time when shopping. A few years ago, my dad and I dropped my mom off at a mall outside Harpers Ferry, WV and then we proceeded to Harpers Ferry for a Civil War adventure. When we returned, my mom was scolding us for coming back “too early.” Apparently, her watch battery died and she thought it was only 3:45PM when it was actually closer to 8PM!
I definitely do not have my mom’s shopping endurance, but I can keep up with her Thanksgiving week. 😉 Our shopping culminates with Black Friday shopping. It used to be we would wake up at 3AM on Black Friday and get to the mall around 5AM. However, for the last few years, to my chagrin, Black Friday shopping has started Thanksgiving Day. Fortunately, in my family, Thanksgiving and family time trump retailers forsaking family traditions.
At Thanksgiving dinner, we start with prayer giving thanks to God for all our blessings. Then, we enjoy Dad’s cooking, laugh, and reminisce; sometimes making new memories. Once the evening is over, Mom and I commence Black Friday shopping giving sleep the night off. This year, we shopped for 14 hours straight though not a record breaker!
I now look forward to Christmas. My mom loves giving socks and underwear to the men in my family despite their protests. It’s become an annual tradition watching my dad and my brother open female lingerie boxes full of socks and some version of tighty-whities. Not to be outdone, my dad has his own Christmas tradition of gifting soap-on-a-rope to the men in my family even extending this gift to my past boyfriends and my sister’s as well. It is hilarious watching their reactions because for “new blood,” this gift is highly unexpected. It is in these moments that I am especially grateful that I am a girl! 😉
I wish everyone a safe and fabulous holiday season!
Have a wonderful week!
Lizzy’s Latest for this week is the Marc Fisher Tailynn booties. I will give my review of these pumps on Wednesday. For now, enjoy the pictures!

Thanks, Bill! 🙂 Of course, I have to confess, I didn’t shop 14 hours in stilettos! 😉 Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving! 🙂
